What a thrill it was for me to catch up with Sen. Debbie Stabenow in Lansing recently. I have long admired Sen. Stabenow, particularly her strong advocacy for the middle class. Sen. Stabenow and I have a few things in common. Of course, we're both women, and we're both lifelong Michiganders and proud Michigan State University alums.
And I'm following in Sen. Stabenow's footsteps in running for the Ingham County Board of Commissioners. That is where Sen. Stabenow began her political career in the 1970's. She served on the Board with Ken Hope, my husband Evan's uncle. In fact, Sen. Stabenow told Evan and me that Ken was one of her first mentors.
When I am elected, I hope to live up to these two great legacies: that of Ken Hope, who had a tremendous heart for his community, and that of Sen. Stabenow, who blazed a trail for future generations of women leaders, like me.
